About Charleston

Charleston, South Carolina is "America's Friendliest City", and its "Old and Historic District" is a National Historic Landmark of 3,000 buildings that have been diligently preserved by the locals. It is also known as the "Holy City" because of the abundance of churches and steeples. In 1670 the city was founded as Charles Towne named after King Charles II of England, and the culture of Europeans and Africans in the customs, architecture, and visual arts can still be seen. The Mount Pleasant Visitor Center is due to open July 4, 2009 including a hall seating up to 150 people and a catering kitchen. Another new facility is Founders Hall with space for large gatherings. The Children's Museum will have a pirates exhibit. Sunset Sails are available as well as Summer Wine Strolls, Wine Tastings, and cooking with wine classes. The Hayward-Washington House is the city's first historic house museum where George Washington stayed for a week in 1791. St. Philip's Episcopal Church has a beacon that was used to guide ships from 1893 to 1915. The South Carolina Aquarium features marine life and exhibits. Charleston/Kiawah Island was voted No. 1 of North America and Europe's top 38 golf destinations. Plantations (such as Drayton Hall and Middleton Place) are available for tours and date back centuries with homes, cemeteries, and beautiful gardens to explore as well as demonstrations of the skills that had been performed by slaves. Annual festivals include Fine Art Dealers, Sweetgrass Cultural Arts, Harbor Fest, and others.
